Teachers should love learning, right? But, what happens when the clerical tasks assigned to teachers are so involved that teachers refuse to learn one new thing for fear that the new thing they’ll learn will transform into another task that will hampered their teaching time? Hmmm….if teachers don’t want to learn how can they teach the love of learning to their students?
According to the dictionary cognitive dissonance is “anxiety that results from simultaneously holding contradictory or otherwise incompatible attitudes, beliefs, or the like, as when one likes a person but disapproves strongly of one of his or her habits”.
There you have it a nutshell. Cognitive dissonance in teachers helps perpetuate inequities and social in justice in classrooms across America. What are we going to do about it?
